Were you expecting to find a cost per page for the design of your web site?

You may have found that some web site designers charge per page and restrict the number of images and interactive features you can have. 4site Webs has a professional objection to this sort of charging policy for three reasons:

  • Firstly it does not take into account the unique requirements of your business. A well designed web site projects an appropriate image of your company and has structured comprehensive content that focuses on the needs of your customers. Good design would be constricted by image and page limitations, thus decreasing the effectiveness of your web site. End result, less effective web site - less return on the money you invest into a web site.
  • Many of these 'designers' limit you to two images a page and naturally charge extra for more images and interactive features. Your company logo and one heading would take up your allotted image count, and that's before you even start displaying your products/services. So beware, it might seem a reasonable cost but usually these charges are inflated by necessary 'extras'. As an example, one of my clients BL Beautiful Lingerie, has a web site with over 160 pages that contain over 440 images. At a charge of 50 per page with a two image limit (a regularly used charging structure) this web site would have cost them in excess of 10,000. A figure far in excess of the fees I charged them. If that doesn't convince you, the page you are viewing now contains 7 images! So you could be charged in the region of 190 for this page alone, by pay per page designers.
  • In many cases this approach actually costs more. It stands to reason that some pages are more time consuming to design than others, which a fixed price quotation will take into account. For instance the fixed price quotation for my client Taylormade Fireplaces worked out at less than 40 per page and that included many more than two images a page and several interactive features.

An example of the cost of designing a web site

At 4site Webs a fixed price quotation is produced for each potential client, which is contractually binding.

As the most time consuming part of developing a web site is creating the 'look & feel' of the web site, which is necessary whether your web site has 5 pages or 500 pages, it will not cost less than 500 + vat (currently 20%). After that though the difference between having 5 pages or 30 pages could be a little as 400 + vat (currently 20%), obviously depending on content and interactive features.
